Sixty-three young people, ages 8 to 15, representing more than 10 counties across the Middle Susquehanna watershed participated in one of six HERYN (Helping Engage Our River's Youth with Nature) program days held from June 20-25, 2022, at the Central PA Wesleyan Campground near New Columbia. The program introduced these participants into fundamentals of kayaking and fishing, building skills and confidence throughout each day to a variety of competitions. The young people caught more than 800 fish during the week, mostly pan fish from the campground lake. The program concluded each day with a demonstration on how to clean, filet and cook fresh fish with a taste test for those who were interested, along with an Enviroscape presentation on watersheds and pollution with a focus on ways people can help protect our freshwater resources via everyday activities. This event would have been impossible without the incredible support of numerous groups, businesses and individuals. Our primary sponsors included the Susquehanna River Basin Commission, Bass Pro Shops and the PA Fish and Boat Commission. Other critically important donors for the week included Clark's Wiggy Worm (of Penns Creek), On Fire Promotions (Shamokin Dam), Graceful Catering (Middleburg), Dominos Pizza (Milton), Jean's Grub Sub Hub (Montandon), Weis Markets and the Central PA Wesleyan Campground (New Columbia). ** More photos and videos are being added ... please check back soon for updates.
