A look back at HERYN 2023 in photos, videos and news coverage: 86 youths participate over six program days

A total of 86 young people ages 9-14 participated in one of six Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association HERYN (Helping Engage Our River's Youth with Nature) program days held between June 22 and June 28, 2023, at the Central PA Wesleyan Campground near New Columbia.

Riverkeeper John Zaktansky pulled together an overview story about our 2023 HERYN program titled Confidence, appreciation, awareness among key lessons for 86 young people during 2023 HERYN program.

Thursday, June 22

A total of 12 young people participated in the first HERYN program day of 2023, divided into two teams of six. Lunch was provided by Graceful Catering out of Middleburg. 

The Milton Standard-Journal's Matt Jones attended the program day and wrote an article titled "Engaged in Nature." 

FRIDAY, JUNE 23

A total of 14 young people participated in the second HERYN program day of 2023, divided into two teams of seven. Lunch was provided by Skeeters BBQ out of Shamokin Dam. 

Saturday, June 24

A total of 14 young people participated in the third HERYN program day of 2023, divided into two teams of seven. Lunch was provided by Arrowhead Bar & Restaurant, of Milton.

Monday, July 26

A total of 14 young people participated in the fourth HERYN program day of 2023, divided into two teams of seven. Lunch was provided by Gunzey's Hot Sausage, of Milton.

The Sunbury Daily Item's Rob Inglis visited today's program and later published an article titled HERYN continues to grow in Valley. It was accompanied by an editorial by Bill Bowman titled HERYN opens waters, more to local kids.

Tuesday, June 27

A total of 17 young people participated in the fifith HERYN program day of 2023, divided into one team of nine and one of eight. Lunch was provided by GoodWil's Restaurant of Montandon.

WNEP-TV's Chris Keating attended this program day, producing a news clip titled Outdoor learning for future enthusiasts.

Wednesday, June 28

A total of 15 young people participated in the final HERYN program day of 2023, divided into one team of eight and one of seven. Lunch was provided by GoodWil's Restaurant of Montandon.

    Riverkeeper John Zaktansky is an award-winning journalist and avid promoter of the outdoors who loves camping, kayaking, fishing and hunting with the family. 

    Regional Director Andrew Bechdel joined the team in early 2024 with a wide variety of natural experiences and a desire to educate.
