Phenology in our watershed for this month:

- Black bears are entering "hyperphagia" ... which means they are eating constantly to build up reserves for winter hibernation
- Owls, such as barred and screech, can be heard more frequently at night this month
- Maple leaves usually hit peak fall coloration by the middle of this month
- Black tupelo leaves turn brilliantly red by mid-October
- Bluejays can be seen collecting acorns later in the month
- Tamarack needles turn a smoky gold color in the final weeks of October
- There are a few fun "holidays" to keep on your calendar, including World Animal Day on Oct. 4, World Habitat Day on Oct. 5 and Reptile Awareness Day on Oct. 21.
