HERYN June 23, 2025 (Day 4): Twelve participants deepen love for fishing, kayaking despite heat6/26/2025 Despite real-feel temperatures approaching 105 degrees, eight-year-old Ezra Miller admitted during his Monday, June 23, HERYN (Helping Engage our River’s Youth with Nature) kayaking and fishing day camp that he left program yearning for more. “I had done both before, but now I want do them even more,” he said in his exit survey. Thirteen-year-old Adalyn German, of Bloomsburg, agreed. “I fished a lot before but never kayaked, but definitely want to do more after this,” she said. “I liked it all today, the fishing and the games.”
In all, twelve participants caught upwards of 150 fish in approximately an hour of fishing after instruction in both casting and knot-tying. Kayaking including an overview in safety, life jacket usage, how to enter a flipped boat and some skills games. The program day was altered to factor in the heat with participants receiving interactive environmental education sessions in an air-conditioned building with games, prizes and other activities during the hottest parts of the day.
